Idaho uses the formal term Assumed Business Name, abbreviated ABN, for the filing commonly called a DBA. The state business portal says businesses register their name and entity type with the Idaho Secretary of State before operating, but the entity context matters. A sole proprietor using another public name registers the ABN. A partnership registers an ABN and also files a Statement of Partnership Authority. A corporation or LLC registers its legal business name through its entity formation document; that formation filing must not be described as an ABN. The state's guidance also stresses that filing only an ABN does not create a separate legal entity, provide liability protection, serve as a business license, or prevent an LLC or corporation from using the name. The official paper alternative is the Certificate of Assumed Business Name, which asks for the assumed name, the individual or entity names using it, a general business category, and a correspondence address. Filing online avoids the additional $20 manual-processing charge applied to paper, while completed paper forms may be mailed or hand delivered to the Secretary of State's office. Search availability before filing, but do not mistake a search result for acceptance or for trademark protection. These distinctions matter because “active until cancelled” is not permission to leave a materially obsolete public record unchanged.
